As a new grower, it can be tough to know when it’s time to harvest your buds. After all, many decisions, from watering schedules to lighting setups, all factor into how long it takes for your buds to develop, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. That said, there are some visual cues you can look for that usually indicate it’s harvest time.
First and foremost, look for the telltale signs of flowering. These can consist of white, furry pistils and clouds of trichomes (the microscopic mushroom shaped ‘hairs’ that produce resin) on the buds and leaves. Trichomes will have a white or yellow tint to them when they’re immature and ripe, they’ll have a much more milky white shade. When nearly all the trichomes have become milky white, then your buds are probably ready for harvesting.
Next, when harvesting marijuana buds, consider the milky color of the trichomes the primary signal for when the plant is mature enough for harvest. However, some growers also use the color of the pistils as a secondary sign for when to harvest. The pistils should look yellow, orange, or brown, depending on the strain, indicating that most of the THC has been converted to the other cannabinoids and that the plant has reached its peak.
Finally, when you know the basic visual cues for when to harvest, you need to learn how to inspect your buds. Carefully observe the buds and take a look at the trichomes. You can do this by gently pulling the bud between two fingertips, making sure to only touch the stem and not squeeze the flowers. When you’re ready to inspect, look for the pistils to see their color and the trichomes to see their color and whether they’re milky or cloudy. Once you’re comfortable inspecting your buds, it will be much easier to determine when they’re ready to be harvested.
No matter what, the best method when trying to figure out when to harvest is to practice and observe. With time, you’ll be able to look at your marijuana buds and know within a few days when they’re ripe and ready for harvesting. Ultimately, the wait is worth it because harvest results come from how well you monitor and nurture your plants, so be patient. You can do it!
