Making cannabis-infused butter can be a simple, yet rewarding and delicious process. Decarboxylation is an important step in the process in order to convert the non-psychoactive cannabinoids found in cannabis into their more active form, activating their therapeutic properties. This will also help to ensure potency in the finished product.
The process for making cannabis-infused butter begins with grinding your cannabis flower or extract of choice. This is best done with a food processor or weed grinder for a more consistent grind size. Once the cannabis is grinded, toss it evenly onto a sheet pan, spreading as evenly as possible. Preheat your oven to approximately 240ºF and decarboxylate the cannabis for approximately 25 minutes. After the timeframe is reached, remove the sheet, stirring and moving the cannabis around on the sheet to ensure an even decarboxylation, then let cool.
Once cooled, incorporate the decarboxylated cannabis into your butter by using a double boiler. Start by heating the butter in the top part of the double boiler. Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the butter and let simmer over low-medium heat – low enough that you don’t see any significant bubbling, but enough to ensure constant movement of the liquid in the pan. Simmer the mixture for 1 hour to ensure complete infusing, stirring occasionally.
After 1 hour, remove the double boiler from the heat and strain the mixture with a fine mesh strainer into a glass bowl. This will remove any plant material from the infused butter.
Once cooled, the butter can be used as an ingredient in any recipe calling for butter, or simply enjoyed as-is. Additionally, if you want an extra-potent cannabis-infused butter, use a ratio of up to 1/4 ounce of cannabis to 1/2 cup of butter. Be careful though as it’s easy to make a butter that’s stronger than you want it to be.
Making cannabis-infused butter doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right preparation and decarboxylation, you can make a delicious, potent butter that can be used in a variety of recipes. All it takes is a little patience, some butter, and some cannabis!
