Topping is a technique used by cannabis growers to increase the bush-like form of the plant and increase the yield of each individual plant. It is a simple trimming technique usually performed by growers midway through their growth cycle, after the fourth or fifth node has been reached.
First and foremost, it’s important to remember that topping should only be done when a cannabis plant is healthy and in the vegetative stage of growth. If you try to top a plant that’s in its flowering stage you risk stunting your plant’s growth.
With that being said, when topping is done correctly, the end result will be a bushier plant with higher yields, quality and quantity. This is achieved by cutting off the tops of the plant’s main stem or branches and encouraging the plant to grow two separate new growth points.
From each of these new growth points, you will now have two new colas rather than one. As you can imagine, the ability to double the number of colas you can get from a single plant allows you to increase your overall yield of quality buds dramatically.
Topping starts by taking two flowering nodes off the top of the main stem. If a cannabis plant is left alone, energy will be sent to one stalk which will grow bigger and bigger, in turn dominating the entire plant.
By trimming off the tallest node, the plant is forced to grow outwards in a bush-like form. This plant-training technique allows growers to shape the height of the plant and encourages the plant to start growing horizontally rather than vertically.
Once the top of the plant has been cut, it will encourage the growth of two new colas on either side of the original cut. You can continue topping up to 4 or 5 times for an even bushier plant.
So if you’re looking to get a higher yield and quality buds, topping is one of the best ways to do so. It’s also important to keep a few things in mind when topping. Make sure to use clean, sharp scissors when cutting and be gentle. Also make sure that you don’t top the plant too early and that it’s in the vegetative cycle.
Topping is an easy technique that anyone who is growing cannabis can use to increase their yield and quality of buds. Just make sure to follow the tips above and you’ll be on your way to a higher, bushier plant and bigger yields.
