When it comes to the two most beloved indica-dominated cannabis strains of all time, Granddaddy Purple (GDP) and Purple Urkle, it’s hard to say which one is the better choice—it really depends on what someone is looking for in a strain.
The two iconic strains, also known as “Granddaddy Purple Urkle,” were created almost two decades ago by two legendary cannabis breeders. GDP was created in 2003 in California by breeder Ken Estes, while Purple Urkle was created in the 1980s in the Humboldt County area of Northern California by the Mendocino Purps seed company.
The similarities between these two strains are that both are extremely popular, sticky Indica-dominant hybrids that provide a strong, sleepy body high and boast flavors of grapes, earth, and berries. Both are typically bred from Genetics that have a purple and blue hue, characteristic of the famed Purple strains.
The main difference between GDP and Purple Urkle, however, can be found in their potency and terpene makeup. GDP has a high THC level of up to 25% or more, while Purple Urkle averages between 12-15%. GDP is known for having a terpene profile that consists of high levels of limonene, beta-caryophyllene, terpinolene, and myrcene. Purple Urkle, however, has higher levels of caryophyllene and humulene.
In addition, the effects of each strain are slightly different. GDP typically produces a strong cerebral cloud, along with physical and mental relaxation. Purple Urkle, on the other hand, offers typically a less intense but more numbing body high, often with a pleasant head buzz.
So which strain should you choose? It really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. For those in search of a more “heady” high, the high THC levels of Granddaddy Purple may be the better choice. For those looking for a more sedative and “couch-locking” high, however, Purple Urkle may be more suitable.
No matter which strain you decide to go with, each will leave you feeling physically relaxed, sedated and given their potency, can also be helpful in managing stress, anxiety, depression and even pain.
Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to decide what works best for them. Both of these strains have proven to be popular over the years, and they’re sure to keep the hype alive.
